Down in Atlanta, tempers – and temperatures – are about to flare…
As a mercenary who cleans up after magic gone wrong, Kate Daniels has seen her share of occupational hazards. Normally, waves of paranormal energy ebb and flow across Atlanta like a tide. But once every seven years, a flare comes, a time when magic runs rampant. Now Kate’s going to have to deal with problems on a much bigger scale: a divine one.
When Kate sets out to retrieve a set of stolen maps for the Pack, Atlanta’s paramilitary clan of shapeshifters, she quickly realizes much more at stake. During a flare, gods and goddesses can manifest – and battle for power. The stolen maps are only the opening gambit in an epic tug-of-war between two gods hoping for rebirth. And if Kate can’t stop the cataclysmic showdown, the city may not survive…
I was right, now that I have the world settled in my mind, and I was able to start getting to know the characters, this book impressed me much more than the first one.
I knew I would like Kate. She just gets out there to get the job done and is ready to kick ass. She takes a lot of bumps along the way, but she is still out there doing what she thinks is best. I was so impressed with how she took Julie under her wing and pulled on the protective role. She didn’t know this kid from a hole in the ground, but she saw someone in need and did what she could to help.
Bran was such a fun addition to the scene. His flirty, fun dance in and out of the story always left me with a smile. Then there was Curran and his sneaky “courting” ways. Curran is developing a protective sense on Kate despite her determination to drive him crazy.
There was a lot of fun action and battles that Kate takes on, fighting for her city, no matter the odds. Kate has been taught since she was a child that she could never let anyone into her life, but we see Kate allowing herself to care about others more and more. Sometimes to devastating consequences.
I’m definitely falling for this series and coming to understand what the appeal is and where all those 5 star reviews are coming from!
