Atlanta would be a nice place to live, if it weren't for the magic. When the magic is up, rogue mages cast their spells and monsters appear, while guns refuse to fire and cars fail to start. But then technology returns, and the magic recedes as unpredictably as it arose.
Kate Daniels works for the Order of Knights of Merciful Aid, officially as a liaison with the mercenary guild. Unofficially, she cleans up the paranormal problems no one else wants to handle - especially if they involve Atlanta's shapeshifting community. When she's called in to investigate a fight at the Steel Horse, a bar on the border between the territories of the shapeshifters and the necromancers, Kate quickly discovers that there's a new player in town. One who's been around for thousands of years - and who rode to war at the side of Kate's father. This foe may be too much even for Kate and Curran, the Beast Lord, to handle. Because this time Kate will be taking on family.
We’ve always had in the background just how powerful Kate’s father is, and how she still is not prepared to face him. But is she prepared to face another member of the family?
Magic Bleeds starts out with a case for Kate that just gets stranger and stranger. Nothing new for her, but the clues and the power of the enemy she is tracking make it like something Kate’s never encountered. Each attack confuses us more and more on just what it is Kate is dealing with. This thing is powerful and every time we think we know what it is, it does something different, like a whole different magic entity. Our brains get a good workout with Kate trying to decipher just what we are up against. It keeps us guessing right along with her!
Once we have nailed down what we are dealing with (and isn’t that just the biggest surprise!) I was thinking in overtime on what Kate was going to do. When I’m listening to this series, I think of Kate more with her sword than with any magic of her own, so I was concerned when I knew what she was facing and knew she was going to need some magic.
The final battle, my God, I thought my mind was going to blow with the adrenaline! It is so intense, and people fall that you wouldn’t expect to fall and relationships take irreparable damage. My heart was in my throat and I think I even screamed a little. I was alone in my car, don’t worry, not too many think I’m crazy!
I love the way the Kate Daniels series puts our brains to the test along with Kate, deciphering clues and working cases. You feel like you are right there working with her. However I am blown away sometimes by all the knowledge she keeps stored in that head of hers. I don’t know about the written books, but I do know the audiobooks pull me into the world so completely that sometimes it’s hard to come back to reality. The Andrews team, along with Renee Raudman, really know how to transport you into this new world.
