Kate Daniels is a down-on-her-luck mercenary who makes her living cleaning up magical problems. But when Kate’s guardian is murdered, her quest for justice draws her into a power struggle between two strong factions within Atlanta’s magic circles. Pressured by both sides to find the killer, Kate realizes she’s way out of her league—but she wouldn’t want it any other way…

I have been so excited to start this series! There have been so many awesome reviews that I can’t believe it hasn’t made it to the top of my TBR a little faster. I had really high expectations going into the series.

This was a whole lot of new world that took a lot of description for me to wrap my head around. I think I spent more of the book trying to picture the scenes instead of getting to know the characters. I really enjoy the kick-ass, tough, snarky heroines and Kate seems to be shaping up to just that. She jumps into the action head first and seems almost fearless. I wish I was able to get to know her better during the book because I think it would have changed my POV. I am not a fan of Curran. I know that at some point in the series, Kate and Curran come together, but I think he needs an attitude adjustment first.

I did enjoy the mystery and the problem solving involved. I still had to take the time to relate the world with what was happening though, which was distracting. One thing I’m incredibly fascinated by is the way the vampires are controlled by the Masters of the Dead.

Now that I have a better understanding of the world, I am hoping to have a better experience with book two. I really want to get to know these characters better.

Renee Raudman did a good job with the narration. I’m glad she is the narrator for the rest of the series as I’m interested to see how her narration develops as we go.

About Ilona Andrews

Ilona Andrews is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. author2sm“Ilona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.)
