Carys Chase is accustomed to making her own rules and letting her heart lead the way—no matter what anyone else has to say about it. A rare Breed female and a daywalker as well, headstrong, beautiful Carys is one of the most powerful of her kind. She lives passionately and loves without limits, especially when it comes to the lethal cage-fighting Breed warrior called Rune.
Unbeatable in the ring, Rune exists in a brutal world of blood and bone and death. He’s made his share of enemies both in and out of the arena, and his secrets run as deep and turbulent as his past. A dangerous loner who has survived by his fists and fangs, Rune has never allowed anyone to get too close to him…until Carys. But when the bodies buried in his past rise up to threaten his present, Rune must choose between betraying Carys’s trust or putting her in the crosshairs of a battle neither of them can hope to win on their own.
It seems like I’ve been waiting for this book for a long time. I’ve been excited about it mainly because it is one of Lara’s first self-pubbed. Not so much because of the main characters of this book.
I think this has been our third full length book since we did the 20 year time jump. There have been two novellas in there too. Those two novellas do contain information that is somewhat important in Bound To Darkness. I think it is definitely worth it to have read those going into this one.
I will admit, Carys was not a character I was really looking forward to. I was hoping to get to know some of the other members of the Order’s teams. It would even be interesting to take us to some of the other command centers besides Boston. Maybe that is something coming up in the future. Carys really isn’t part of the Order, nor is her love interest in this book. Their relationship is also revealed in the previous book, so we know they are already together. There isn’t really a build up to the couple realizing they are meant to be. That being said, there are a lot of secrets amongst the couple and the romantic portions of the book focus on Carys and Rune breaking down the trust walls. However, Rune’s secrets just keep popping up after Carys thinks he’s revealed all of his past. Then comes the biggest secret, and I thought Carys was going to take that one the hardest. There was a lot of questions surrounding it though and his reaction to her finding out that put a lot of doubt in her mind.
I did end up enjoying Carys and Rune. Rune may not be part of the Order, but he is a tough bad ass. Not only is he gorgeous and tough, but he’s smart too. Taking charge of the business that Jordana does not seem to have the interest in. Once the big secret is revealed and we all go into adrenaline mode, we see Carys and Rune really play off each other’s strengths. Carys turned out to be much more of a bad ass than I thought she would be and I loved it.
The Order itself is still plotting and investigating both of their biggest adversaries. We still have Opus Nostrum and the Atlanteans. There is progress on both fronts. I really love Zael and hope he remains a big player in future books!
The only other thing that really bothered me was time line. We’ve had all 3 full length novels and two novellas all happen within a couple of weeks. When reading each book, it seems like you’re within at least a week, so it is possible I guess. But when one little tidbit is revealed between a recent couple, I was like “wha?” If we are following the timeline, they would have only been together like a week. Possibly they are generalizing when they talk of when things have happened.
This is definitely another great book in the series. I can’t wait to see the progression on the Order’s mission and see who the next couple is going to be. Fingers are crossed that it is Zael and Brienne! Or maybe we’ll get to see some of the characters from the other command centers! Whatever Ms. Adrian writes for us, I will definitely be at the first of the preorder line.
