July’s update is a little late. I’ve been home from Literary Lovers Savannah for just over a week and I am still trying to catch up. I should have been more prepared. I had a great time (minus the 16 hour drive) meeting new authors and people. Unfortunately, I spent the rest of my year’s book budget while I was there. Not quite sure how I’m going to deal with that. I got to do some crazy things like have a tarot card/intuitive reading, a rune reading and I got a tattoo. If you can believe it, it is a pug reading a book. How appropriate, right?
I love him, he is so cute! What I don’t like is this awful itch during the healing process. It is driving me NUTS! Plus, I had a bad experience with my last tattoo, so I’m quite overprotective of this one. But so far it’s been awesome. Except for the itch! 😉
Also, I am so glad my travel mate really gets me. It made the trip so much more relaxing and I didn’t feel pressured to do things I was too stressed to do. It really made the trip easier for me. THANK YOU ANNIE!
Well, upon my return, things fell instantly back into craziness mode with these dogs. I took Monday off after our driving on Sunday to get back into the groove, only to find out my severely anxious dog had a UTI. Off to the vet even though I swore I would never traumatize that dog with another car ride. This was her first visit with the new vet and her large lump on her leg was noticed. They did a fine needle aspiration and found that it was a mass cell tumor. Needed to be removed ASAP. So she went in for surgery on the 3rd. I don’t think she’s going to forgive me for taking her out of the house any time soon. Her anxiety is unreal. We will be praying that the biopsy comes back ok and nothing else will be needed. I’m telling you, I love my dogs, but rescuing older dogs can really be a drain, so maybe 5 pugs were a bit too many to take on. Someone is always sick and on medications!
For anyone that read last month’s update, you’ll remember that my family had gotten some bad news about my father. I won’t go into too much detail, but we found that things were quite aggressive and they got him right into chemo and immunotherapy treatments right away. This is going to be tough for him and we are also worried about his kidney taking the treatments as his remaining one wasn’t in the best of shape before starting this. He has a lot ahead of him and we are praying that all works out positively. It’s been a scary time for us.
So onto the budget. Like I said, I pretty much used up all of my book budget at LLS. To add to this dilemma, I’m pretty sure I am going to go to Readers & ‘Ritas in November. You may be asking yourself, “but you said you wanted to go to Book Lovers Con in the spring”. Well, I DO. However, I’ve been adding up the costs on that, and have become very undecided. Both my kids and their significant others want to go, which means I will need to also get a dog sitter for that whole week. I will really need to sit down and do a budget for the whole con, find the money for the ticket before the tickets sell out and then do some serious saving. The way this year’s budget is going, it doesn’t look like I’m going to be carrying over much of a surplus. Now, Readers & ‘Ritas has been a con I’ve gone to in the past but have missed the last two years, mainly because of the way it was run and the same roster of authors over and over again. This year the line up looks good and I’m told that they are changing things up so I’m excited to see the result. BUT I have not budgeted for this con. Or at least I HAD, but then had decided not to and moved that ticket budget to my books. I think I’m going to have to face the fact I’m going to go over budget this year. It also means I’m going to have to really hold back on the book buying. That always makes me feel bad because I know the authors like to do these cons partially to sell books, and I want to help make it worth it for them. Anyway, it looks like I’m going to go over, I’ll just have to control by how much. I’m trying to figure out how I’m going to show this all in my table. But for now, let’s see how July looks.
|Category||Amount||Spent this Month||Remaining Balance|
|B&N Membership Renewal||$25.00||$0.00||$0.00|
|Buns & Roses + Bear||$75.00||$0.00||$75.00|
|Literary Love Savannah||$225.00||$0.00||$2.46|
|Readers & ‘Ritas||$0.00||$0.00||$0.00|
|Books (Ebooks, paperbacks & hardcovers)||$263.63||$263.29||$0.34|
Well, as the numbers show, my budget has taken a big hit. The ticket to R&R is actually $199 so that is going to wipe out what I have left. I’ll be buying that as soon as I find out if my roommate is going to be able to go. Hopefully in August. I will still work out what it would cost us to go to NOLA next spring, I just don’t know if it’s going to work.
My book haul for July is just way to large to list them all individually. I think I will list the books I received before LLS and then a pic of my pile from the con. I will be here all day trying to list all my LLS books! Also, at LLS, I was one of Milly Taiden’s VIP readers and received an amazing gift bag from her. It was really exciting. So here is my pre-con haul!
So July has been a crazy month with a HUGE book haul. I am really excited to get into some of these books. I’m hoping to get over my small book slump. I’m still finding it hard to read at home. I’m getting through my audiobooks with my commute so I’m not behind on my GR challenge yet. But it is getting close. I did have some breathing room and was ahead, but I’ve slipped some. I think I’m going to change things up and start reading in bed again. Reading out in the livingroom, without being able to snack, really is uncomfortable. I can’t sit comfortably and the call of the fridge and pantry is just distracting.
How was your July? Are you making any con plans? Did you grab some great books?
