How long will you wait for the next book to be published before you lose interest?
Most series do their releases once a year. I say most because I know there are a few that just don’t seem to have any timeline at all.
Depending on the series, I can do the year long wait. It’s tough, and I feel like pulling my hair out. But it’s doable for a great series. For the series that don’t stay at the front of my head, a year may be too long. My clue is my preorder list. I’ve stopped preordering for now, but previously, if I read the book, loved it and immediately preordered the next, a year is worth it. If I loved it and went to preorder to find it unavailable. That series is in trouble. That, to me says that no definite release date has been set, and I could be waiting years for the next installment.
I’ve noticed there are a lot of my favorite authors that are trying to write more than one series at a time. Normally that staggers the releases of the books I want. That is somewhat forgivable if I like the other series as well. However, after that year mark, those characters are fading for me. I may have loved them at the time, but the wait and confusion of the different series has everything mixed up in my head.
There is one series that had years between books. I still bought the newest. I haven’t read it yet. I lost interest a long time ago and that book is just not a priority for me now. It makes me sad that I had such great fun with those characters, but I just don’t care about what happens to them anymore. I can’t remember where they were at, what the story line was. There is just too much time between the books.
This scares me because right now there are multiple books from my favorite series that have big waits. I hope I can get through the wait without losing interest. They really are amazing series and I would hate for them to get lost. I used to get this email that would alert me when a new book in my favorite series was coming out. I don’t get those anymore, so either release dates on my favorites are just too far out or the service doesn’t exist anymore. I’ll have to check that out.
So, I’m going to give my cut off a year. Much more than that is a big, big risk. Such a hard call with a couple I know are going to go beyond that and a couple that are now on the chopping block because I’m just sick of waiting. I know authors have lives, so I can’t be too judgmental. But when it is a repeated thing, or that is just how that series releases, over a year is just too much.
