Tell Me Something Tuesday is a weekly discussion post hosted on Rainy Day Ramblings where we discuss a wide range of topics from books to blogging. Weigh in and join the conversation by adding your thoughts in the comments. If you want to do your own post, grab the question and answer it on your blog.

This week’s topic:

Do you stress over blog traffic and stats?

When I started the blog, it was a hobby. I wanted traffic because I wanted interaction with readers. I measured by comments. Not really looking at the stats or analytics. Lack of comments lately had me looking to see just what kind of traffic I was getting. I also wanted to compare what social media outlets were getting me the most hits.

So it was the lack of comments that started the stress. At first I was all excited when I saw my numbers when I finally got the nerve to check. But when I realized a ton of my hits were spam hits, I started to look at things differently. Now I do stress. The stats have made me sit back and think about how much time and energy I put into the blog. The content is another point.

I know there are some things I can do to help drive the traffic. But they will take even more time and energy unless I find automated free solutions. Do I want to let those numbers push me into a place where that is all I focus on? I think not. This is a hobby. I blog because I think it is fun, I love the interaction I do get as well as making new friends and getting to rant and rave about my books. That was the whole point in the beginning. I know these numbers can drive your status with the publishers (which I love), but I can’t let these numbers become my focus.

So I have been stressing over numbers, but have been pushing myself to just let it go. To enjoy what I’m doing and not get wrapped up in competing for numbers. But, they say talk is cheap, let’s see if I can actually put it into action!

Are stats and traffic a big focus in your blogging life? What makes that important to you?
