TellMe

Tell Me Something Tuesday is a weekly discussion post hosted on Rainy Day Ramblings where we discuss a wide range of topics from books to blogging. Weigh in and join the conversation by adding your thoughts in the comments. If you want to do your own post, grab the question and answer it on your blog.

Are most of your review books for publishers or are you reviewing books of your choice?

I want to say a bit of both. The publishers I work with will send out an email with a bunch of choices or if it is for a single book, they don’t come across like they expect you to review it. They approach it as if it is my choice, just know that it’s available if I’m interested.

Most of the books I read do come from publishers or tour groups. I review everything I read, but for the most part it is books I’ve received. The ones I have a hard time with are the ones I really wanted but the time frame to read and review was just too short. You mostly get that from the tour groups where they give you a certain day. I feel pretty open with publishers but do try and review close to review day unless there are many coming out on the same day.

I just don’t feel a lot of pressure from publishers. I think they understand that bloggers have a lot on their plate and we just can’t get to all the books despite our desire to. Letting us choose the books we’re interested in is helpful for them too as they get to know us and who to approach with individual books.

Sometimes I do find that my personal choices get left behind a little bit because of the review books I’ve chosen. I regret that and have tried this year to fit in some of my own personal picks between review books. I’ve just tried to spend more time reading to get them in. I am picky with my audio review books, so I’m mostly listening to personal choices in audio. I seem to be getting in a lot more audio than e-reading lately which I need to rectify to catch up a little bit. There are some books I’m still dying to get to on my Kindle.

Because of the ratio between my personal choices not provided by pubs and the books I receive from pubs, I think I review more for publishers. It is definitely not a hardship since they have great books to choose from, but I’ve got to fit in more of my personal TBR too. That is a goal for this year!
