A yearning that won’t be denied
Rachel Marek is a journalist with a plan. She intends to expose the truth about dragons to the world – and her target is within sight. Nothing matters but getting the truth, especially not the ruggedly handsome, roguishly thrilling Highlander who oozes danger and charm. And when she finds the truth that shatters her faith, she’ll have to trust her heart to the very man who can crush it…
A legend in the flesh
Suave, dashing Asher is more than just a man. He’s a Dragon King – a being who has roamed this planet since the beginning of time. With everything on the line, Asher must choose to trust an enemy in the form of an all too alluring woman whose tenacity and passion captivate him. Together, Asher and Rachel must fight for their lives – and their love – before an old enemy destroys them both…

Asher appealed to me because he seemed so relaxed and informal yet took on the professional job at the WWC representing Draegan and did it well. However, I was disappointed in his quick reaction to Rachel right from the beginning. I know there is a lot of insta-love in the series. Especially with the novellas. But I just felt like he was a little naive when falling for Rae’s attempts to get information from him. Seeing her thumb ring all over the convention should have given him more of a clue.
Rachel came across very distant and just angry at the world. Her determination to reveal the Kings seemed so engrossing. She had nothing else in her life to distract her. She claims to have never felt desire, which left me kind of thinking “whaaa”, but Asher lights that fire. I think that her new emotion is part of what totally distracted her from her job. I think because we really don’t get to know her until near the end of the story, I felt irritated by her. I knew she was giving into Asher but she just would not give up on her job. It wasn’t until the couple both reveal their secrets that I found I felt a little sympathy towards her.
Throughout the whole story, and the interactions with each other we suspect that Rachel is Asher’s mate, but is interesting that we are not sure until the Dark Fae try to snag her. I didn’t quite understand why Ulrick wanted the Dark Fae to use their magic on her when he planned on killing her himself.
Now that we have most of the romantic stuff established, we get to move on to the main storyline with Ulrick. He’s been so sneaky and really keeping the Kings on their toes. Because of his careful planning, no one has truly known just how much of his power has returned. The reveal to Asher seemed like he was revealing to someone unimportant. Not that I think Asher was unimportant, I just thought a big surprise like this he would either reveal to the Kings as a group or directly to Con. It made for a good fight with Asher, but Ulrick leaving the scene let you know that this was just a taste of what he could do. He wasn’t going to give away anymore secrets than he was ready to give. I don’t think Ulrick would have killed Asher because he would need someone to return to Con to let him know. Ulrick was strong enough that he could have been King of Kings. I can’t see him walking away from Asher who would most likely not be able to beat him. I wonder what he is up to next.
I felt like Rachel and Asher coming together left Asher looking a little vulnerable and I really worried about his plan to confront Rachel after her secrets were revealed. I think her questioning her job completely made me think a little differently about her.
As usual, I love the parts with Ulrick. He always has surprises. You just never know what he will do. I couldn’t figure out if his plan was for Rachel to fall for Asher, or if he saw her lack of desire as assurance that she was immune and he could get a good story reveal from her. He is just so unpredictable.
I love seeing the Kings, who have been unable to love for so many centuries finally finding mates. I wasn’t so convinced on this pairing, but it is a novella. Novellas need to move things along pretty quickly, so any complications in the couple had to be resolved quickly.
I think this is a BIG addition to the series with Ulrick’s reveal, and needs to be read in order along with the novels.
